FOWOKAN return to the music scene with a new sound and a fantastic first album, “Shadow of Rasta”.  

fowokan-new-2-copy-creditsForged from their time together in “Cymande”, the legendary British funk band, FOWOKAN re-unites core member Sam Kelly (drums/bvs) with lead vocalist, Jimmy Lindsay.  In 2009 Jimmy performed at The British Lovers Rock Show where he received an Award for his contribution to Lovers Rock and British Black Music. With a lengthy legacy in the UK and international music scenes, Jamaican-born drummer, Sam Kelly, is highly respected for his musical ability across all genres including reggae, R&B, soul, jazz and funk.  FOWOKAN is also Paul Jobson (MD/keyboards/bvs), Richard Sadler (bass), Tony Qunta (guitar/bvs), Michael ‘Lally’ Carey (guitar/bvs) and Jerome Marcus (percussion/bvs). Each of these musicians brings their own history of great performances and collaborations.

The members of FOWOKAN have performed live at the London Jazz Festival Stratford, The Jazz Café London, the BBC Soul Britannia All Stars Tour and One Love Festival.   FOWOKAN  have also supported OSIBISA at Fairfield Halls, Croydon as part of the African Music Festival.   The band have been successfully touring in Europe over recent years including France, Holland, Germany and Austria.   They have an established fan base across the U.K.



JL Gibson GirlJimmy is a genuine reggae/soul artist with a cultured musical history. He began as a soul singer in the sixties and came to fame as the front man of Cymande in the 70’s . Jimmy then went on to a solo career and found himself at the forefront of British reggae aligning himself with reggae greats as Joe Gibbs, Jimmy Cliff, Bob Andy and Bob Marley. Jimmy’s song writing delves deeper into the roots of reggae and communicates a powerful message through his Jamaican heritage, touching your soul and dancing feet. His strength of song writing is documented on three solo albums ‘Where Is Your Love’, ‘Children Of Rastafari’, and ‘Jimmy Lindsay and Rasuji Live at The Venue 1980’. He has performed alongside Ronnie Lane, E.L.P, Steel Pulse, Status Quo and many contemporaries. His chart success includes his superlative re-working of the 1977 British Reggae award-winning single Commodores’ ‘Easy’ and ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’. Jimmy has his own record label ‘Music Hive’ and returns as lead vocalist with FOWOKAN to re-deliver the magic of British Black Music once again.


SamSam’s playing career started in the early 1970’s with British funk band ‘Cymande’. His self-taught style of drumming has made him a much sought-after, successful musician with a career spanning some forty years. Sam continues to work around the World, stamping his brand on all genres of music, from blues to rock, R&B, funk, soul and reggae. His vast list of credits includes working with Rico Rodriguez, Chaka Khan, Nicky Thomas, Crown Prince Miller, Janet Kay, Victor Romero and Taka Boom, Roger Chapman and the late, great Gary Moore. With a delicate sensitivity to rhythm and a great understanding of dynamics in music, he has earned the respected position of Musical Director for Soul Britannia. Sam has also been honoured in Blues in Britain’s ‘Gallery of Greats’ after winning ‘UK Drummer of the Year’ for five years running. 


paulEPaul is internationally recognised for his versatility, creativity and talent on the keyboards. He has played alongside Chaka Khan, Taka Boom, Hamish Stewart, Joss Stone, Bad Manners, Barbara Mason and the Emotions.  Recent he has also performed with Boney M, The Impressions, Ben E. King and Zigaboo Modeliste.  Amongst his many musical achievements, Paul was M.D. for Cymande II during their very successful U.K. and European tours. He is M.D. for FOWOKAN.

tony croppedTony is a talented musician with over 20 years experience in the music business.  He is a singer/songwriter and lead guitarist. He has worked with artists such as Pauline Black, Everett Moreton, Wesley Magoogan, ‘Odyssey’, Mervyn Afrika, Cheryl Alleyne, Mamadi Kamara, Kabbala, Grace Kennedy, Helen Rodgers, Johnny Mars and Zigaboo Modeliste.


Richard moved to London in 1989, giving himself five years to succeed or fail as a musician… Since then he played regularly across all genres – jazz, pop, blues, reggae …even country! He continues to work as a musician, composer and sound engineer. He has worked as a studio session musician for Ray Davies (Kinks), Paul Weller, Tom Jones.He has played at some of the big festivals in the UK (Glastonbury, The Big Chill, London Jazz Festival) and has performed in major venues in the UK from Queen Elizabeth Hall to Ronnie Scott’s.


JEROMEFrom his origins as a drummer, Jerome brings a percussion connection which enhances the sensitivity and vibrancy of FOWOKAN’s contagious groove. He is a contemporary percussionist with an understanding of heartbeat rhythms from Latin, African and other genres in World Music.  He has performed with Zigaboo Modeliste, Imelda May, Robben Ford to name but a few.  Jerome’s vast experience includes touring alongside Hot Chocolate, Mary Wilson, Wang Chung, Kool & The Gang

Lally 1Lally is an entirely self-taught musician who truly plays from the soul.  His style is his alone.  With powerful vocals and incredible muscianship on lead guitar, Lally brings his vibrant stage presence to FOWOKAN performances.
